Truck-Mounted Versus a Portable Machine, and Why the Difference Is Water

If you've ever gotten quotes from a couple different carpet cleaners, you've probably noticed they all describe the process the same way. Hot water extraction. Steam cleaning. Deep clean. The words are close to identical, but the machine that actually shows up at your door can be worlds apart, and the difference usually comes down to one thing: how much water it's working with.

What's actually parked outside

Our trucks run a diesel-engine truck-mounted extraction unit. It stays parked at the curb, and it carries roughly 350 gallons of water on board, along with the heat and vacuum power to put that water to work and pull it back out. A portable unit, the kind that gets wheeled into the house on a cart, is running off a small electric machine carrying somewhere around 10 to 20 gallons.

Why the gallon count actually matters

It's not just about having more water for its own sake. A truck-mount's higher water volume comes paired with a much stronger vacuum recovery system, which means more of the water that goes down into the carpet comes back out again in the same pass. A portable unit, working with a fraction of the water and a fraction of the suction power, tends to leave more moisture sitting down in the pad, because it simply doesn't have the pull to get it all back out before the tank runs low.

That leftover moisture doesn't just sit there quietly. A pad that stays wet for a day or two is more likely to let soil wick back up into the carpet from underneath, hold onto a musty smell, and keep you off the room longer before furniture can go back.

The dry-time difference tells the story

With our Free Speed Dry system, most rooms are dry in 1 to 6 hours. A portable job, because it's leaving more water behind in the pad, commonly runs 24 to 48 hours before the carpet is fully dry. That's not a small gap. It's the difference between walking on your carpet again that evening and keeping kids and pets off it for the better part of two days.

How to tell which one showed up

It's easier to spot than most people think. A truck-mount job means hoses running from a van or truck at the curb, in through your front door. A portable job means a machine about the size of a suitcase, wheeled in and plugged into your own outlets. Neither one is a secret once you know to look for it, and it's a fair question to ask before you book: is this truck-mounted, or portable?
