What a Free Test Spot Actually Proves

Every job we've done since 1989 starts the same way. Before anything is charged, we clean a test spot in whichever room is bothering you most, and you look at it before deciding on the rest of the house. It's a simple thing, but it's worth explaining why we do it this way and not some other way, because the details of it actually matter.

Why the worst room, not the best one

It would be easy to demonstrate a cleaning method on the room that already looks decent. Almost anything looks better after a cleaning if it wasn't that bad to begin with. That doesn't tell you much. Testing in the room that's actually causing you grief, the hallway that gets tracked through every day, the room where the dog sleeps, the spot by the back door, tells you whether the method works on your actual problem, not on an easy one.

What to look at when you inspect it

• Color: does it come back close to the carpet's original shade, or is there still a gray or yellow cast left behind
• Texture: does the pile feel soft and springy again, or stiff and crunchy once it's dry
• Residue: run your hand over the dry spot. It should feel clean, not tacky or filmy
• The edges: a good test spot should blend into the surrounding carpet rather than leaving a visibly cleaner square with a hard line around it

Why we do this before charging anything

A phone quote asks you to trust a description. A test spot asks you to trust what's in front of you. You're not deciding whether to hire us based on what we say the carpet will look like. You're deciding after you've already seen it. If something about it doesn't sit right, you're not out anything, and you're free to say no.

We also stand behind the work after the full job is done. If a spot comes back within seven days, we'll come take care of it. That's not part of the test spot itself, but it's the same idea running through the whole job: you shouldn't have to take our word for it when we can just show you.
